Welcome to Lavita Advisory Council — Dr. Salman Avestimehr, Dean’s Professor of Electrical and Computer Science at the University of Southern California

We are pleased to announce a new addition to Lavita AI’s advisory board, Dr. Salman Avestimehr, a distinguished scholar in the fields of electrical and computer engineering, information theory, and especially AI. His expertise and accomplishments make him a valuable asset to our team, and we are excited to have him on board as we continue our journey.

A Visionary Leader in AI and Beyond:

Dr. Avestimehr is a Dean’s Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor of Computer Engineering and Computer Science, the inaugural director of the USC-Amazon Center for Secure and Trusted Machine Learning (Trusted AI), and director of the Information Theory and Machine Learning (vITAL) research lab. He is also the CEO and co-founder of FedML further demonstrating his leadership in the AI and machine learning community. He was also an Amazon Scholar in 2021. He received his Ph.D. in 2008 in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Awards and Accolades:

Dr. Avestimehr’s illustrious career is adorned with numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious IEEE Information Theory Society James L. Massey Research & Teaching Award, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from White House (President Obama), and many Best Paper Awards at top conferences and workshops. His research has made significant contributions to information theory, machine learning, distributed computing, secure and private learning/computing, and federated learning.

In addition to his research and leadership roles, Dr. Avestimehr is known for his dedication to mentoring the next generation of researchers and engineers. He has received accolades such as the USC Mentoring Award and the ACM/IEEE High Performance Computing Conference (SC) Best Student Paper Award Finalists, showcasing his commitment to fostering talent and innovation. He is known for his rigorous approach to research, his passion for teaching, and his dedication to advancing the field of AI including distributed computing, private learning/computing, and federated learning.
